Vietnamese Pilot Career Outlook

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (“CAAV”) expects that the demand for pilots in Vietnam is between 10,000-15,000 over the next 20 years.  That means that on average, the airlines in Vietnam expect to hire 500 to 750 pilots per year. Boeing also estimates a global demand of over 800,000 new pilots, with 645,000 being commercial fixed-wing pilots between now and 2038. The  Asia-Pacific region is estimated to need almost 250,000 of these pilots, 38% of the  global demand, and air travel continues to grow in demand in this region.

Additionally, over the next 10 years, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts 4.2% annual passenger growth and a market of 4.8 billion air passengers by 2027 – that’s an additional 1.6 billion passengers. Along with passenger growth, IATA reports that the number of unique city-pairs has roughly doubled in the past 20 years to over 18,000, and  will exceed 25,000 by 2027, requiring additional aircraft – and pilots – to serve these new routes.

Vietnamese Pilot Career Path

Once you are hired at an airline you will be in a position called First Officer.  After flying for the airliner for several years you will meet the qualifications to be a Captain.  It will require additional testing to qualify, but the average airline captain in Vietnam makes between US$5,000 (115,880,000 VND) and US$15,000 (347,640,000 VND) per month income. After becoming established in their airline career,  pilot with around 4,000 hours of total flight time can earn $25,000 per month or roughly $300,000 per year flying for airlines in Asia (Source: https://thepointsguy.com).
